Charlotte Andergast, a successful international concert pianist, is devestated by the loss of her partner Leonardo, leaving her in a state of loneliness and bewilderment. Soon after Leonardo's death, Charlotte's estranged daughter Eva contacts her and asks her to visit her home in small town Norway. Having not seen each other for seven years, Charlotte takes this opportunity to attempt reconciliation.For several days the two women confront each other, revealing a lifetime's worth of repression.
